Anyone looking for a mobile launch monitor for the driving range, home training, or their own golf simulator will quickly come across two devices: the Garmin Approach R10 and the new FlightScope Mevo Gen2.
Both devices fundamentally work with radar technology, both can be used indoors and outdoors, and both offer significantly more than just a simple measurement of ball speed and shot distance.
Nevertheless, they do not target quite the same audience.
The Garmin R10 has been one of the most interesting entry-level devices on the market for years. The FlightScope Mevo Gen2, on the other hand, is significantly newer and positions itself technically a step above. FlightScope combines 3D Doppler radar with image processing in the Mevo Gen2 and calls this technology Fusion Tracking.
We have examined where the differences truly lie and which device is the better choice for which golfer.

Garmin R10: Still one of the best entry-level launch monitors
The Garmin Approach R10 has significantly changed the market for affordable launch monitors.
Before the R10, comprehensive shot data and golf simulation were predominantly reserved for significantly more expensive devices. With the R10, Garmin has created a compact device that provides ball and club data while offering a relatively straightforward way to play golf at home.
Garmin speaks of more than a dozen captured golf metrics. Directly measured values via radar include Ball Speed, Club Head Speed, Launch Angle, and Launch Direction. Other values are calculated based on the measured data.
For the classic amateur, this is already an enormous amount of information.
For example, if you want to know:

the R10 is already a very useful training device.
This remains its greatest strength: the price-performance ratio is excellent.

FlightScope Mevo Gen2: The technically more ambitious approach
With the FlightScope Mevo Gen2, it becomes significantly more interesting if you not only want to play golf but also want to analyze your shots more precisely.
FlightScope uses what is called Fusion Tracking in the Mevo Gen2, which is a combination of 3D Doppler radar and image processing. Even in the basic version, FlightScope states that 20 ball and club parameters are available. These include Carry Distance, Ball Speed, Club Speed, Smash Factor, Launch Angle, Spin Rate, Spin Axis, Apex Height, Angle of Attack, and Spin Loft.
And this is precisely where the Mevo Gen2 begins to differentiate itself from the Garmin R10.
The Mevo Gen2 feels less like a mere consumer gadget and more like a serious training system.
The device becomes even more interesting with the optional Pro Package. This allows for the display of more than 30 parameters, including important D-Plane data such as Club Path, Face Angle, Dynamic Loft, and Swing Plane. Additionally, FlightScope can unlock an optional Face-Impact analysis, which shows the impact location on the clubface.
For ambitious golfers, golf professionals, or players who want to specifically work on their swing technique, this makes a big difference.
Accuracy: What is the real difference?
With affordable launch monitors, one thing should be understood: not every displayed value is actually measured directly.
The Garmin R10, for example, measures certain basic parameters via radar and calculates additional values from them. Garmin itself states an accuracy of ±1 mph for ball speed and ±1 degree for launch angle and launch direction for directly measured parameters. For calculated data, Garmin states ±5 yards for carry distance, among other things.
For normal golf training, this is absolutely usable.
However, the FlightScope Mevo Gen2 goes further technically. The combination of radar and image processing enables FlightScope to perform a more comprehensive analysis of ball flight and club movement. Especially with spin data and more demanding training, we therefore see the Mevo Gen2 clearly ahead of the Garmin R10.
This does not mean that the Garmin measures poorly.
Quite the opposite.
For its price range, the R10 is still impressive. However, if you want to regularly compare your data with professional training systems or work with spin, spin axis, angle of attack, and later perhaps club path and face angle, you will reach the limits of the Garmin sooner.
Indoor use: Both devices need space
One point is often underestimated when buying a radar launch monitor: You need space behind the ball.
For the Garmin Approach R10, Garmin recommends positioning it between 6 and 8 feet behind the ball, which is approximately 1.8 to 2.4 meters. Additionally, indoors, at least about 8 feet or 2.4 meters of ball flight should be available to the net or impact screen.
The FlightScope Mevo Gen2 is similar.
FlightScope specifies a distance of 7 to 9 feet between sensor and ball for limited-flight applications, and at least 8 feet of ball flight. For the most reliable spin measurements, FlightScope recommends or requires metal dots on the ball or Titleist RCT balls for short indoor ball flights.
Thus, for both devices:
For very small spaces, radar systems are not the optimal solution.
If, for example, you only have about four meters of total depth available, you should rather consider a camera-based launch monitor.
However, in sufficiently long rooms, both systems work well.
Indoor spin measurement: RCT balls make a difference
Especially in indoor operation, spin is one of the most challenging values for radar systems.
The ball in a golf simulator only flies a few meters, while outdoors it could often be observed for 150 or 200 meters.
For this reason, special balls like the Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x RCT are interesting. The integrated radar marker helps the launch monitor better detect the ball's rotation.
Garmin also recommends RCT balls to improve the R10's spin and distance measurement, especially indoors.
With the Mevo Gen2, the aluminum stickers supplied by FlightScope can be used as an alternative. FlightScope currently includes 100 of these stickers with the device.
Anyone who primarily wants to use their launch monitor indoors should definitely consider this point.
Simulator Software: This is where it gets exciting
Both devices can do much more than just display a virtual driving range.
With the Garmin R10, Home Tee Hero is particularly interesting. With an active Garmin Golf membership, more than 43,000 golf courses can currently be played virtually. Additionally, Garmin supports E6 Connect; according to Garmin, five E6 courses are available for free for Approach launch monitors.
This makes the Garmin particularly attractive for players who want to play golf at home without complications.
FlightScope takes a somewhat more open approach.
The Mevo Gen2 supports E6 Connect, Awesome Golf, and GSPro, among others. At the same time, the device currently includes a package with eight E6 Connect golf courses for PC and iOS. The support for GSPro, in particular, is a strong argument for a permanently installed golf simulator.
Anyone who wants to transform their system into a full-fledged simulator in the long term will find significantly more options with the Mevo Gen2.
Outdoor on the Driving Range
Here, both systems play to their strengths.
Set up the device, connect your smartphone or tablet, and get started.
The Garmin R10 is extremely straightforward and offers a significant advantage for long training days with a battery life of up to 10 hours.
The FlightScope Mevo Gen2 has a battery life of up to 6 hours, according to the manufacturer. However, it offers more extensive data analysis and also has an integrated camera. Swing videos can be automatically recorded via the FS Golf App and synchronized with the corresponding shot data.
For occasional training, we would therefore not see a major disadvantage with the Garmin.
For structured training, gapping sessions, or technically detailed swing analysis, however, the Mevo Gen2 is the more interesting tool.

Anyone looking for a straightforward entry, wanting to measure their shot distances, and play a little simulator golf on the side, gets a lot of technology for their money with the R10.
In a direct comparison, however, the FlightScope Mevo Gen2 wins for us.
Not because the Garmin R10 has suddenly become bad, but because the Mevo Gen2 simply offers more possibilities in the areas crucial for serious golf training.
